A drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway and a hike at Black Balsam Knob … a must do activity, especially in the Fall in NC.
Tucked away in the North Carolina mountains, Black Balsam Knob is a awesome place waiting to be explored. Come fall, this spot transforms into a kaleidoscope of oranges, reds, and yellows – with each season being a little different to the one before. Here’s why you gotta add it to your autumn bucket list.

The East Fork Overlook was a great place to stop on our way to Black Balsom, the views from here were amazing! There is a ‘toilet’ block at nearby Graveyard Fields, but the car park is usually crammed full, just like the walking trails … so we avoid it.
Hike the Trails: With over 11 miles of interconnected trails, there’s something for every level of hiker. The summit trail is a must-do, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. We hiked the short track up to Black Balsam Knob with our dog, Benji, and he enjoyed scrambling up the rocky incline more than we did. I would call this a moderate hike, with approximately 425 feet in elevation over a distance of about 0.7 miles. This trail is part of the Art Loeb Trail system, begins in a dense balsam fir forest and ascends through rocky, grassy mountain meadows to reach the treeless summit at 6,124 feet. The view from the top was an amazing 360 degree panorama – and definitely made the hike worth the effort. Whether you’re a leaf peeper or just love the great outdoors, Black Balsam Knob is a must-visit this fall.

Colette’s Recommendations: Fall Colors: The peak season usually hits in mid-October. Arrive early and be prepared for crowds. Bring a camera – the views are awesome. Wear layers, as temps and the wind can change quickly. Wear good boots and don’t forget snacks and water. We took a picnic lunch. We have done many hikes in the area and prefer this one over the popular Grave Yard Fields hike. Much better 360 views and not as crowded. If your looking for a longer, or overnight hike, try the Art Lobe Trail.
Travel Tip: Get there early to beat the crowds and get a parking spot. The parking area fills up fast. Getting There: Located near Brevard, NC, Black Balsam Knob is about a 45-minute drive from Brevard or Asheville. Take the scenic route – the winding roads are part of the adventure
. If heading up there from Brevard, make sure to stop at Looking Glass Falls.
